John Rex Charter School is seeking a Assistant Head of School to lead the opening of a downtown OKC middle school site in August 2018. The Assistant Head of School (AHOS) will function primarily as the instructional leader/administrator for grade 6 (adding one grade per year in the following years) in order to support the Head of School/Superintendent (HOS) in all aspects of administration and leadership of John Rex schools. This position reports to and works directly under the supervision of the HOS to lead, assist, and support all administrative & educational activities, programs, operations, services, and systems for the middle school in accordance with the school’s mission, vision and values.

Prior experience in a high performing middle school setting is a requirement for this position; candidates with advanced degrees and demonstrated strong backgrounds in personalized learning, effective instruction, curriculum design, technology integration, and leadership of specialized programs is preferred. Personal characteristics necessary for the position include: enthusiasm for quality public charter schools and urban education; organization and attention to detail; critical-thinking skills and problem-solving abilities; entrepreneurial spirit; initiative; warmth and a good sense of humor; collaborative nature and consensus-building skills; patience and persistence; and excellent communication skills.


A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Education (School Administration) or a related field with demonstrated educational leadership, administration, instruction/supervision, and management skills are required. A study program that includes advanced hours in leadership, curriculum, instruction, and/or assessment is preferred. Five to seven years of progressively responsible professional experience is preferred.

  • To lead, assist, and support all administrative & educational activities, programs, operations, services, and systems for the middle school in accordance with the school’s mission, vision and values.
  • To act as Head of School in the Head’s absence and communicate about situations occurring at the school
  • To fully support the Head of School keeping the HOS informed on all student, faculty, family, and/or community issues and all other relevant matters pertaining to school life.
  • To sustain and enhance the school’s climate and culture, involving the leadership team, faculty and families in support of the school’s mission, vision, and values.
  • To work to produce and maintain safe, orderly, effective, efficient, and smooth day-to-day operations.
  • To participate in the life of the school and establish a positive campus presence in order to retain a clear sense of the schools’ mission, vision and values.

Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment (responsibility to assist the HOS to produce, supervise, or manage):

  1. Guide implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment using Oklahoma Academic Standards for all content areas as well as specialized areas (special ed/gifted-talented) including electives/enrichment offerings.
  2. Lead the development, monitoring, and successful implementation of personalized learning programs for students using Summit Learning as the core framework and major focus.
  3. Arrange for teacher training: in-services, conferences, workshops, in-school mentoring.
  4. Assist in the development, supervision, and evaluation of extended-day programs.
  5. Serve as District/Building Test Coordinator in accordance to Oklahoma SDE requirements.
  6. Analyze the assessment programs including frequent monitoring of progress and results; create reports for the school, the Board and parent community in accordance with federal, state, and local educational requirements

Supervision (responsibility to assist the HOS to produce, supervise, or manage):

  1. Supervise and evaluate job performance, develop and monitor improvement processes for teachers, staff, and teacher assistants as needed.
  2. Provide verbal and written evaluations for staff
  3. Attend and/or facilitate staff meetings and collaboration/team meetings.
  4. Develop agendas, provide notice of meetings to all management team members, and ensure adequate representation from each horizontal and/or vertical team, special education, and bilingual programs, etc.
  5. Develop and provide appropriate compliance in-services for staff and arrange for outside training services
  6. Manage, supervise, and evaluate effectiveness of the school’s Extended Day Programs.

Student Management (responsibility to assist the HOS to produce, supervise, or manage):

  1. Develop procedures to implement a positive school culture/climate, student management and discipline policy, as well as character education theme.
  2. Track student behavior; record and monitor infractions and complete any required reports.
  3. Meet with students and parents regarding positive resolution to behavior issues.

Communication & Community (responsibility to assist the HOS to produce, supervise, or manage):

  1. Generate a network of downtown area partnerships to provide additional programming and revenue for expanded learning opportunities.
  2. Maintain positive relationships with partnerships through regular communications and networking.
  3. Assist Head of School in preparation of presentations and meeting agendas as requested.
  4. Prepare and update brochures, policy manuals, Parent/Student Handbook and other related materials.
  5. Maintain safety regulations in compliance with local, state, and other governmental entities.
  6. Maintain positive frequent communications and public relations with all stakeholders

Human Resource Management (responsibility to assist the HOS to produce, supervise, or manage):

  1. Recruit, recommend for hiring, and all train certified and support staff.
  2. Develop, implement, and update employee handbook, policies/procedures, and job descriptions.
  3. Perform and conduct performance evaluations.
  4. Oversee employment practices in compliance with state and federal law.

Operations (responsibility to assist the HOS to produce, supervise, or manage):

  1. Responsible for ensuring highly effective programs in compliance with all local, state, and federal rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to, but not limited to Enrollment and Admissions, Special Education, Child Nutrition, Before/After-School or Extended Day Programs, Safety & Security systems and issues, Building & Grounds services, and Custodial services

Charter School (responsibility to assist the HOS to produce, supervise, or manage):

  1. Measures school performance against stated charter goals and objectives.
  2. Implements policies and procedures in accordance to the charter school policies & procedures.
  3. Maintains a dynamic, safe and orderly school environment conducive to high quality learning.
  4. Coordinates the safety of students in compliance with local and state laws
  5. Participates in all extracurricular and after-school activities, including inter-scholastic field trips.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

COMMUNICATION​ ​REQUIREMENTS​ ​(responsibility to assist the HOS to produce, supervise, or manage):

  • Frequent communication and contact with the Head of School, teaching and office staff, parents, volunteers, and community representatives for exchange of information and services, and general problem solving.
  • Written correspondence, newsletter articles, memos, and grant application materials to generate revenue, disseminate general information and education materials.
  • Attends regularly scheduled meetings with Head of School, staff and teachers to maintain collaborative efforts across all programs and departments.
  • Frequent contact with parents for purposes of advocacy, education, and general information sharing.
  • Regularly scheduled group presentations to staff and parents for purposes of training, education and information.
  • Preparation of annual, quarterly and monthly administrative and grant reports for Board and the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

SUPERVISORY​ ​RESPONSIBILITIES​ ​(responsibility to assist the HOS to produce, supervise, or manage):

Responsible for the supervision of middle level certified staff faculty, support staff, and para-professionals. Observes and evaluates classroom functions ensuring a safe and orderly climate conducive to learning, reviews lesson plans, and other educational documents, and addresses curriculum issues with teaching staff. Oversees facility management, child nutrition, and janitorial issues.


  • Demonstrated ability to build an educational value system where high-quality learning focused on inquiry and relevant experiences are a joyful experience that encourages student and leadership growth.
  • Demonstrated experience in educational administration and supervision, especially supervision of staff with diverse educational strengths, development goals, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Must possess fiscal management and budgeting skills.
  • Must have knowledge, skills, and understanding of the purposes and processes of middle level education.
  • Must possess ability to articulate a well-developed middle school educational philosophy and to demonstrate thorough knowledge of major new developments in education, including evidence as to their effectiveness and drawbacks.
  • Demonstrated ability to take the initiative and to stimulate others to drive toward educational goals.
  • Ability to select, lead and improve personnel at all levels within the organization.
  • Possess strong communication skills and a disposition that lends itself to cooperation with professional, non-instructional, and community groups.
  • Experience in the development and/or implementation of quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated record as a positive, creative leader, with a customer-driven service-oriented ethic.


  • Proficient technology skills (e.g. Chromebooks, Microsoft Office Systems and Apple products/apps).
  • Experience in use of multi-media and digital equipment.
  • Knowledge of use and operation of fire alarm and other security systems.


  • Valid Oklahoma teaching certificate
  • Valid Oklahoma middle level administrative certification


​Ability to read, analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, and/or government regulations. Ability to write reports and correspondences as may be appropriate to teaching staff in general and Title I specifically. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, teachers, staff and the general public.


Ability to plan budgets and use the mathematical skills required to do so. Ability to maintain accurate records and supportive documentation for projects under the supervision of the position. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical and diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


Ability to use computer and computer related programs and other technologies needed to perform essential job functions. Ability to apply knowledge and current research and theory. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to organize and chair or facilitate committees and meetings. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties and awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
